Landscapes

My watercolours are grounded in the raw, elemental beauty of the Lake District, where mountains and lakes serve not merely as subjects but as deeply personal sites of memory and emotional resonance. My paintings do not present landscapes as static views; instead, they emerge as living presences—mutable, charged, and deeply felt. My approach foregrounds the atmospheric and expressive possibilities of watercolour, harnessing the medium’s unpredictability to mirror the shifting weather, play of light, and underlying pulse of the terrain itself.
Far from seeking total control, I welcomes the organic movement of pigment and water, allowing back runs, bleeds, and granulating textures to unfold naturally across the paper. These qualities become active metaphors for the vitality of the land—its breath, its moods, its capacity for both calm and tumult. Each composition becomes a site of encounter between control and surrender, echoing the dynamic tension between human presence and nature.
I works primarily with 100% cotton cold-pressed paper, which I chose for its ability to absorb and hold the complexity of layered washes and wet-into-wet applications. My process often begins en plein air, where direct engagement with the elements informs a gestural, intuitive foundation. Back in the studio, these impressions are refined—though never overworked—to preserve their immediacy. Blooms and veils of colour are built up in translucent layers, creating depth and atmosphere without losing the freshness of the initial mark.
I invites you into an embodied relationship with place, where water, pigment, and memory coalesce into something both intimate and expansive.
Once again I had a wonderful time painting along at Watercolor Live in January 2025. Below are some of the paintings I completed from the demos. Thanks to all the wonderful artists who inspired me.
